The newly established Tonchin Ramen in the Larchmont neighborhood of LA is a place you should try if you are in the mood for a legit bowl of ramen. You can watch them make fresh noodles in the special room while you wait to be seated. This place is especially busy in the evenings, so I recommend that you make reservations in advance. Otherwise, you’ll probably be waiting for a while.

Tsukemen @ Mendoki Japanese Noodle Shop

Tsukemen from Mendoki.

Thin yet flavorful dipping sauce. It’s got hints of fish flavor. This style is an acquired taste, but I’m starting to really love it now.

Up close on the 450g of noodles

The large noodle serving of the Tsukemen from Mendoki is 250g before cooking. After cooking, it works out to about 450g. The noodles were chewy and medium in length. I recommend squeezing the lemon on the noodles prior to dipping.

The broth was thin and had a hint of bitterness from the fish flavors that are present.

The head chef was trained at the legendary chain Taishoken in Japan. Taishoken is known for their tsukemen. Given this background, you’ll be enjoying some of the best available dipping noodles in California.

Up close on the vegan miso. You can’t tell from your first look, but there are a ton of bean sprouts embedded in this bowl and it’s what makes this bowl so filling.

The creamy vegan miso is organic soy broth enriched with special whipped vegan miso. The toppings include mixed greens, radish, menma, green onions, corn, and bean sprouts.

The broth is creamy and has a hint of nuttiness to it.

The noodles are chewy and distinct from the hard and thin noodles used in their other bowls. This is a hearty bowl of ramen that will leave you satisfied.
